No plan ever survives contact with the enemy. Never forget that. Business is always dynamic and projects will always go different directions. This month proved it. Had a plan for some internal network rebuilding and some small support projects. Nothing pressing, but cleaning up the task list before a big project kicked off end of month.
On August 7th, those plans blew out the window. Almost literally. A straight line wind event with frequent heavy downdrafts hit our house / office dead on. Winds went from a steady 30-35mph to slightly over 100mph in the blink of an eye. The house took some damage from debris and the force of the wind. Sheds too. Limbs down everywhere. Water in the basement. No electric. For three days. No Internet for five days. We managed just fine. Since the township was hit so bad, Alex, in his role as emergency management coordinator, declared a state of emergency before the storm hit and then as soon as it was safe, started moving out from the house throughout the township checking on the residents and assessing damages for reporting to FEMA. Spent roughly a week doing this while also cleaning up our own damage. Spent a good bit of time driving to other areas for internet access.
Started our installation phase of the site audit project we did last year for a regional utility. Started with the site inspections to gather the details we needed to run the wiring, do the rack and stacks, and grounding work. Did a quick tour of nine sites we had slated for work. In between some of these audits, also did a wireless network design for a small private school in Frederick MD, and another for a non-profit adult care facility in Harrisburg PA.
During August we also spent some time at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, were Alex and Dawn were married and Dawn grew up. Their network has been in need of a redesign and a new phone system installed with better wireless as well. Collabsion did a new design and install started back in the spring in small increments. Installed a managed UniFi system with Protect cameras and Talk phone system. Implemented our managed network package as well with canary devices and internal monitoring and testing server.
